LOWER TUGELA BURSARY FUND

The Lower Tugela Bursary Fund was established after the Second World War by Ian Smeaton, a local farmer who later became chairman of the South African Sugar Association. It was designed to assist families who had lost an opportunity to receive a tertiary education because of the war but has continued until today, managed by legal firm LC Smith in Stanger.

Over the past 65 years, many local candidates of all races have been assisted in financing further education, and the Bursary Fund has changed the lives of many people. Through contributions to the Lower Tugela Bursary Fund and others, we have helped about 120 local children to attend University or Technicon – some becoming Veterinarians, Social Workers and Educators. Two outstanding students have recently been awarded Honours Degrees – both cum laude – one in Computer Science and the other in Electronic Engineering. Another is in his final year of Accountancy.
